Meltwater is a 2 player strategy game designed by Erin Lee Escobedo, published by Hollandspiele.
Set on Antarctica during an alternate 20th Century, Meltwater is a particularly bleak take on a possible outcome of the Cold War.
The missiles have been fired and Antarctica is the sole habitable landmass remaining. However, even as the survivors cling to what hope remains, the war continues and the radiation creeps closer.
Meltwater is a stunning game. Distilling the essence of the hex and counter genre into a simple to learn, hard to master strategy game where the aim is annihilation of the enemy at all costs.
If I had played Meltwater when it was first released in 2018, it would be a contender of my game of the year. Sadly, I didn’t play it until recently.
Nevertheless, I’m making up for lost games now – it plays well solo and there is a Vassal module for online play.

At the time of writing, I am about to film a playthrough video and also creating a ‘3 cool things about…’ article.
I’ll post those here and on YouTube as soon as possible. In the meantime, enjoy this unboxing video.
